Reactor-grade plutonium is not useful for producing 238 Pu for RTGs because difficult isotopic separation would be needed. Pu-238 fuels the radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) that are used in interplanetary research missions. RTGs are lightweight, compact and extraordinarily reliable spacecraft power systems. They provide electrical power using heat from the natural radioactive decay of plutonium-238 in the form of plutonium dioxide. Pu-238 has been used safely in RPS for space exploration for more than 50 years, and the core General Purpose Heat Source module in a modern RPS has over three decades of design and safety testing behind it. Every RPS launched by NASA has worked precisely as it was designed, with some powering missions for more than 35 years and counting.

The density of plutonium-238 at room temperature is about 19.8 g/cc. The material will generate about 0.57 watts/gram of 238Pu. 2021-04-23 · Pu-238 exhibits high heat density and emits primarily alpha particles, which are easily shielded; this makes it safer to handle than most other radioactive materials. High heat density and low shielding requirements both make for a lighter device. Unlike Pu-239, Pu-238 is non-fissile, so it cannot be used in nuclear power plants or nuclear weapons. The proliferation resistance is evaluated based on the plutonium inventory, fissile plutonium fraction, decay heat and spontaneous fission neutrons emission rate per unit weight of the recovered plutonium, 238 Pu/Pu ratio, and 232 U/ 233 U ratio. 238 Pu, 240 Pu, and 242 Pu have high spontaneous fission rate which can significantly reduce a weapon's yield; 238 Pu also has a large decay heat per unit weight that further complicates the design of an explosive device (Pellaud, 2002; Xu et al 238 Pu makes up only one or two percent, but it may be responsible for much of the short-term decay heat because of its short half-life relative to other plutonium isotopes.

While its half life of 28.8 years is much shorter than that of 238 Pu, it also has a lower decay energy with a power density of 0.46 watts per gram. Because the energy output is lower it reaches lower temperatures than 238 Pu, which results in lower RTG efficiency. require Pu-238 Mars Hopper Hop 6-10 km every 7 days for years – needs 2.5 kg Pu - 238 Radioisotope Thermal PhotoVoltaic (RTPV)- Small satellites are increasing in use in near Earth space “ Projections indicate a strong increase in nano/microsatellite launch demand, with an estimated Core Temp is a compact, no fuss, small footprint, yet powerful program to monitor processor temperature and other vital information.
